Letter to Students for Justice in Palestine
As faculty at Hampshire, we salute the Students for Justice in
Palestine and your victory in achieving Hampshire’s divestment from
companies that profit from the Occupation of Palestine. It has been
is truly moving to witness your focus, engagement, and determination
as community organizers at Hampshire. Your perseverance and
brilliance, fueled by a passion for justice, and specifically,
justice for Palestine, is both inspirational and humbling. Thank you.
Hampshire's divestment, the first college in the country to take a
stand, is a giant step in the international movement for Boycott,
Divestment, and Sanctions, and a testament to your organizing skills
and your commitment to find your role in the larger movement to end
the Occupation.
In two years of organizing, you offered the whole campus ways to
enter into a process of learning, thinking, and taking a stand about
the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. You hosted film screenings, invited
speakers, staged mock checkpoints, built a wall, and opened countless
spaces for discussion and reflection. You provided us with
information and analysis based on careful research about the ways in
which Hampshire as an institution was connected by invisible threads
to perpetuating the Occupation, viz. by investing in companies such
as Caterpillar and Motorola, which supply the Israeli Defense Forces.
Your work and your commitment give all of us an opportunity to be
more optimistic, engaged and present in the Hampshire community and
the world.
